about

“Why does tragedy exist? Because you are full of rage. Why are you full of rage? Because you are full of grief.”

—Anne Carson, from her preface to Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides

Pathos comes from the Greek pathea, which means both suffering and experience. Pathos is an appeal to emotion, whether in art or argument or by accident. Pathos creates meaning through feeling—it speaks directly to sentiments that already exist in the hearts of its audience. When a story, a movie, a song, an image (or anything, really) moves you, your emotions are being pulled upon by pathos.

Pathos is powerful—the other two forms of argument in Greek rhetoric are logos (logic) and ethos (ethics). Pathos can circumvent either. Its greatest power is that, unlike logic or ethics, it is often impossible to articulate.

At its worst, pathos can trick you; at its best, it can heal. An experience of pathos can create a catharsis, a kind of release, like dam coming down or a knotted nerve being pressed upon. Artists have a responsibility to use pathos sincerely. Good artists use pathos for healing, or to help their audience achieve a feeling that’s just out of reach or difficult to put into words.
